Why I understand what I understand

I’m Emma. Psychotherapeutic counsellor. Mum.

Founder of DYF Parents.

I didn't come to this work through a textbook.

I came to it through years of not quite being able to make sense of something.

The difference between the parent I wanted to be and the one who showed up when I was tired, or scared, or stretched so thin I'd forgotten what I actually thought about anything.

I trained as a psychotherapeutic counsellor because I needed to understand people. I worked with families for years because I needed to understand what happens between people. I have eleven years of clinical experience.

The qualifications matter. But they're not why I understand what it feels like to love your child so completely and still find yourself reacting in ways that shame you afterwards.

That part, I know from the inside.

I know what it is to parent a child whose needs don't fit the standard.

To be in a meeting with a professional who is politely not listening to what you are telling them about your own child, and to have to decide, in that moment, whether to push back or smile and wait for a better appointment.

To carry the weight of knowing your child better than anyone, and still not always knowing what to do with that knowing.

I also know what it is to do the slower, harder work of understanding your own reactions.

Where they come from. What they're protecting. What they cost you, and your child, when they run the show unchecked.

That work is not comfortable. It is also not optional, if you want things to genuinely change.

I built this work because I needed it to exist. And because I know it's needed by mums who are thoughtful enough to keep asking why, and brave enough to include themselves in the answer.

If that's you, you're in the right place.

🎓 MY PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

I’m a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor with over a decade of experience supporting mothers, families, and individuals navigating emotional overload, identity shifts, and intergenerational pain.

My work is informed by trauma-informed practice, emotional regulation, nervous system science, and deep compassion.

I bring everything I’ve learned as a professional and as a mum into the tools and courses I share through DYF Parents.

🏛️ OUR CIC WORK AND ONLINE BRANCH

In 2019, I co-founded Dream Your Future Families CIC to provide low-cost and accessible support to families in my local area.

From drop-in groups to emotional wellbeing workshops, our mission was always the same: to honour parents as people and create spaces where they feel safe and seen.

As the needs grew and funding changed, we decided to expand online. DYF Parents is the natural evolution of this work:
a sustainable, scalable way to offer high-integrity emotional tools to more mums, without losing the core mission of what we started.
